Epithalon activates telomerase and lengthens telomeres in cultured human cells: published in 2003, reproduced by an independent team in 2025. The cells divided beyond the Hayflick limit, the number of divisions a cell can normally make.
This tetrapeptide (alanine, glutamate, aspartate, glycine) was synthesized from epithalamin, an extract of the pineal gland, the gland that secretes melatonin at night.
It is studied for sleep: in older adults whose nighttime melatonin secretion was low, it restored it (Korkushko, 2007), and across about 90 user reports, sleep is the most cited effect.
- Half-life
- Very short in the blood; the effect works through gene expression and the circadian rhythm, and builds over time.
- Route
- Subcutaneous injection, in cycles.

The pineal gland and melatonin
The pineal gland secretes melatonin at nightfall; with age, it calcifies and secretion weakens. Epithalon is studied for supporting this nighttime peak: it is its most reported effect.
Telomeres and telomerase
Telomeres shorten with every division, until the cell stops dividing. Epithalon activates telomerase in cultured human cells and lengthens telomeres, which extends the number of possible divisions.
Antioxidant action and gene regulation
Epithalon increases the activity of antioxidant enzymes and modulates genes of cell differentiation and immunity, in keeping with the “regulatory peptide” approach of the Saint Petersburg school.
Studied effects and observed timelines
Sleep: it restored nighttime melatonin secretion in older adults (Korkushko, 2007)
One to two weeks
Day-night rhythm: melatonin from the pineal gland sets the signal
Over the course of the cycle
Cellular longevity: telomerase activated, telomeres lengthened and divisions beyond the Hayflick limit, in human cells
Long term, over repeated cycles
What you may feel
- Reaction at the injection site.
- Daytime drowsiness if taken late or poorly aligned with your rhythm.
- More vivid dreams in the first few days for some users.
Stop and consult if
- A sleep-rhythm disturbance that worsens instead of improving.
When to abstain
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Active cancer or a recent history of it (telomerase is also of interest to tumour cells).
- Minors.
The effects to watch for, and how to reduce them
This sheet is educational. It replaces neither a diagnosis nor follow-up: for any medical condition, pregnancy, breastfeeding or current medication, talk to a health professional.
To avoid
- High-dose melatonin at the same time, without adjustment: the effects on rhythm add up.
Decades of research, mostly at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology: telomerase activated and telomeres lengthened in human cells, effects on nighttime melatonin, and favourable long-term follow-ups (health, longevity) in older adults who received epithalamin, not epithalon.
The results on epithalon itself, including the effect on melatonin, come mostly from the laboratory.

Human cells in culture
Epithalon induces telomerase expression and telomere lengthening, with an increase in the number of possible cell divisions.
2003 · Khavinson and Morozov, Neuro Endocrinology Letters
A six-to-eight-year follow-up of 266 older adults who received a pineal gland extract (epithalamin) or a thymus extract, not epithalon itself
Improvement in several health parameters (cardiovascular, endocrine, and immune function) and reduced mortality compared with the control group over the follow-up period. No study of this kind exists for epithalon.
2001 · Anisimov et al., Neuro Endocrinology Letters
An experimental model of aging
Restoration of the melatonin rhythm, increased antioxidant activity, and a longer average lifespan in the model studied.
Does it extend life?
Epithalon is studied for markers of cellular aging: it activates telomerase and lengthens the telomeres of human cells, a result published in 2003 and reproduced by an independent team in 2025. No one can promise years of life.
Why in cycles?
It acts on slow regulatory processes (rhythm, gene expression) that don't need continuous stimulation. The protocol provided with the product spells out the details.
Epithalon or melatonin?
Melatonin tablets supply the hormone itself. Epithalon is studied for the secretion of the pineal gland, which produces it. The two do not add up without adjustment.
