A 2025 systematic review counts 544 articles on BPC-157 published since 1993, and a 2019 review reports favorable results on tendon, ligament and muscle repair across all the studies it covered.
It is a fifteen-amino-acid sequence taken from a protein in human gastric juice, and it stays stable in stomach acid.
It is studied for tissue repair: it stimulates blood vessel formation through the VEGF and nitric oxide pathway, and it raises the expression of the growth hormone receptor in cultured tendon cells up to sevenfold in three days (Chang, 2014).
- Half-life
- Short; the peptide remains stable in gastric juice.
- Route
- Subcutaneous injection, often near the affected area; the oral route has been studied for the digestive side.

Angiogenesis: the VEGF pathway
Blood vessels bring an injured tissue the oxygen and nutrients its repair depends on. BPC-157 stimulates angiogenesis through the VEGF and nitric oxide pathway. In laboratory studies, this is one of its most reproducible effects: an injured tendon regains its blood vessels faster.
Fibroblasts and the FAK-paxillin pathway
BPC-157 draws fibroblasts toward the injury and activates repair genes (EGR-1) and adhesion genes (the FAK-paxillin pathway) that help cells organize. Scar tissue forms faster and in a more orderly way.
Tendons, muscles and the digestive lining
Coming from the stomach, BPC-157 was first studied for protecting the digestive lining (ulcers, anti-inflammatory-induced lesions, experimental colitis), then for tendons, ligaments, and muscles.
Studied effects and observed timelines
Tendon and muscle recovery: faster repair of the transected Achilles tendon (Staresinic, 2003)
In the laboratory: within a few days to two weeks
Joints and ligaments: favorable results across all the studies in the 2019 review
In the laboratory: within a few days to a few weeks
Digestive lining: it was first studied against stomach damage caused by anti-inflammatories
In the laboratory: within a few days to a few weeks
What you may feel
- Redness, warmth, or a small bump at the injection site.
- Brief nausea, dizziness, or fatigue reported by some users in the first few days.
Stop and consult if
- Pain that increases instead of decreasing in an injured area: the injury needs to be assessed, not masked.
- A widespread skin reaction or swelling that extends beyond the injection site.
When to abstain
- Active cancer or a recent history of it.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- A serious injury that hasn't been assessed: get a diagnosis first.
- Minors.
Anti-doping : Prohibited in and out of competition by the World Anti-Doping Agency (non-approved substances, S0).
The effects to watch for, and how to reduce them
This sheet is educational. It replaces neither a diagnosis nor follow-up: for any medical condition, pregnancy, breastfeeding or current medication, talk to a health professional.
- TB-500BPC-157 acts locally, TB-500 diffusely: they complement each other instead of doubling up.
- GHK-CuFor skin and connective tissue: GHK-Cu acts on collagen, BPC-157 on blood vessels.
To avoid
- Long-term anti-inflammatory use without medical advice: it slows the repair the peptide is meant to support.
Hundreds of publications, mostly from the University of Zagreb, on tendons, muscles, nerves, and the digestive tract, with results consistent from one study to the next. Clinical research in humans is more recent and is ongoing.
The 2025 systematic review kept 36 studies: 35 in the laboratory and a single one in humans, retrospective, in 12 patients; it found no clinical safety data.
A 2026 systematic review counts three studies in humans, all small and without a control group (30 people in all), and rates their level of evidence as very low. The timelines given above are those of laboratory research.
2003 · Staresinic et al., Journal of Orthopaedic Research
Experimental model of a transected Achilles tendon, and cultured tendon cells
Faster repair of the transected tendon, measured over 14 days: a tendon more resistant to rupture, better function, more fibroblasts and collagen.
2011 · Chang et al., Journal of Applied Physiology
Tendon cells (fibroblasts) and cultured tendon fragments
Cells grow out of the tendon fragments faster, survive oxidative stress better and migrate more, through the FAK-paxillin pathway.
2014 · Chang et al., Molecules
Cultured tendon cells (fibroblasts)
Expression of the growth hormone receptor rises with dose and time, up to sevenfold on day three; growth hormone added afterwards speeds up the multiplication of these cells.
2018 · Seiwerth, Sikirić et al., Current Pharmaceutical Design
Review by the Zagreb group: digestive tract, tendon, ligament, muscle and bone
Compared with the growth factors that build blood vessels (EGF, FGF, VEGF), BPC-157 was effective in every model of digestive tract injury reviewed, and it improves tendon, ligament and bone repair through its own effect on blood vessel formation.
2019 · Gwyer et al., Cell and Tissue Research
Critical review of studies on tendon, ligament and muscle repair
All the studies reviewed show favourable and rapid repair, with few adverse effects reported. Most were done in the laboratory; research in humans is beginning.
2025 · Vasireddi et al., HSS Journal
Systematic review in orthopaedic sports medicine
544 articles found from 1993 to 2024, 36 studies kept: 35 in the laboratory, where BPC-157 improves muscle, tendon, ligament and bone repair, and one retrospective study in humans, where 7 of 12 patients injected in the knee for chronic pain reported relief lasting more than six months. No clinical safety data were found.
2021 · Lee and Padgett, Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine
Retrospective study without a control group: 16 patients injected in the knee
Of the 12 patients who received BPC-157 alone, 11 reported improvement. This is the study kept by the 2025 systematic review, which counts 7 of 12 relieved for more than six months.
2026 · Poolton et al., Acta Orthopaedica Belgica
Systematic review of the studies in humans
Three studies kept, 30 people in all, none with a control group: poor methodological quality and a very low level of evidence, according to the authors.
Local or systemic?
The effect is present whether the injection is near or far from the area; many choose to inject close to it. The protocol provided explains the technique.
What about athletes?
BPC-157 is named outright on the World Anti-Doping Agency's Prohibited List (section S0, non-approved substances): it is prohibited in and out of competition. An athlete subject to testing should not take it.
