Retatrutide
What is common, what is less so, and what to do if something is out of the ordinary.
What most people notice
Nausea or bloating: this is the most common effect, especially at first and at each new step. It usually eases with time.
Less appetite than expected, to the point of having to remember to eat enough.
What can also happen
- Occasional vomiting.
- Heartburn or burping.
- Constipation or loose stools.
- Fatigue or low energy.
- A slight increase in resting pulse.
- Gallstones, as with any rapid weight loss.
To reduce these effects
- Eat small portions, more often, without fatty or heavy meals around the injection.
- Drink water regularly.
- If a step is hard to tolerate, stay on it longer before the next one.
- Eat enough protein and stay active to protect your muscles.
When to talk to a professional
With this product, especially if you notice:
- Intense stomach pain that lasts, especially if it radiates to the back.
- Repeated vomiting that keeps you from keeping liquids down.
- Palpitations, a feeling of being unwell, or unusual shortness of breath.
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or very dark urine.
If a symptom is severe, lingers or worries you, stop the product and talk to a healthcare professional. An immediate reaction after the injection, such as trouble breathing or swelling of the face, needs medical care right away.
Specific to this product
- It is not recommended with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2.
- It is also not recommended with a past pancreatitis or an eating disorder, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- With insulin or another medication that lowers blood sugar, the effects can add up: talk to your doctor first.
- It is not combined with another product of the same family.
- It slows digestion and can change how oral medications are absorbed, including the birth control pill: talk to your doctor.
Where the research stands
Level of evidence: Documented in humans
Its tolerance is documented in humans by several clinical trials, one of them in more than two thousand adults. Digestive effects are by far the most frequent.
